What is Auto Gann?

Auto Gann hangs Gann's geometry off the market's own swings. The Gann Box takes the last swing high and swing low as opposite corners and divides the box into eighths, across price and across bars, with a diagonal from corner to corner. The Gann Fan draws rays from the newest swing at fixed price per bar ratios, and can add Square of 9 levels around that swing's price.

The Gann Box is on by default and the Gann Fan is off. Both read the same confirmed swings. Nothing moves once drawn; a new swing draws a new box or a new fan.

This is a closed-source premium script. It runs on Altrady's servers, so only its output reaches your chart and its code is not published.

Components

Auto Gann combines 2 tools in one script. Each one has its own switch in the settings.

  • Gann Box. The last swing high to low as a box, cut into eighths across price and across bars, with its corner-to-corner diagonal. On by default.
  • Gann Fan / Square of 9. Rays from the newest swing at price per bar ratios scaled to the market's volatility, with optional Square of 9 levels around the anchor price. Off by default.

How to use Auto Gann

  • The 4/8 line. The midpoint of the box, the same price as the equilibrium of the swing. The 3/8 and 5/8 lines around it form the band Gann readers watch most.
  • Time divisions. The vertical eighths divide the swing in bars, so the 4/8 vertical marks the middle of the trading in that swing.
  • The 1x1 ray. On the fan, the 1x1 is the typical pace of a swing leg. Price staying above a rising 1x1 is moving faster than usual; falling below it, slower.
  • Square of 9 levels. Horizontal levels above and below the anchor price, spaced further apart as price rises. They are read as places price may turn, regardless of when.

Components

SettingDefaultRangeWhat it changes
Show Gann BoxOn The last swing high to low as a box, cut into eighths across price and across bars, with its diagonal.
Show Gann FanOff Gann rays from the newest swing at a price-per-bar unit scaled to ATR, and optionally Square of 9 levels around it.

Swings

SettingDefaultRangeWhat it changes
TimeframeChart Chart, 15m, 30m, 1h, 4h, 1DRead the swings from a higher timeframe while trading a lower one. The chart's own period must divide it exactly. A box's width is then divided in bars of THAT timeframe, and a ray's time unit is one bar of it.
Swing Length5 1 or moreBars either side of a pivot. It is also the lag: boxes and anchors are confirmed swings, so each appears this many bars after its swing happened, and then never moves.
Significance (ATR x)1.5 0 to 10A swing is ignored unless the leg into it covered this much ATR. Raising it gives fewer, larger boxes and fewer, more significant anchors.

Gann Box

SettingDefaultRangeWhat it changes
Box Divisions8 2 to 16How many parts the box is cut into. Eight is Gann's and is why these are called eighths; the midpoint is then 4/8. Changing it relabels every line, since each is named for its share of the whole.
Box Show Price DivisionsOn The horizontals, at fractions of the box's height.
Box Show Time DivisionsOn The verticals, at fractions of the box's width in BARS. Both corners are in the past, so each lands on a real bar. A box narrower than `Box Divisions` bars gets none, because two fractions would land on the same bar. Its price divisions still apply.
Box Show DiagonalOn The corner-to-corner line: the box's own 1×1, and the only part of the box that has a slope.
Box Max Boxes1 1 to 5How many boxes stay on the chart. One by default because a full box is around twenty lines; two is readable, more is not.
Box Extend Price Lines RightOn Run the horizontals to the right edge, since they are levels a reader uses after the swing is over. The verticals never extend: they divide the box and mean nothing outside it.
Box Line StyleDashed Solid, Dashed, Dotted
Box Divisions Colour #787b86 The eighths, both directions. Neutral: a subdivision makes no directional claim.
Box Diagonal #2962ff The corner-to-corner line.

Gann Fan

SettingDefaultRangeWhat it changes
Fan Max Anchors1 1 to 5How many anchors keep their rays and levels. One by default: a full set is a dozen lines and two anchors is the most a chart stays readable with.
Fan Show RaysOn The rays.
Fan Ratios1x1, 1x2, 2x1, 1x4, 4x1 Each entry is price units × bars, comma separated. 1x1 is the classic 45° on squared paper; 2x1 is twice as steep and 1x2 half as steep. Anything unparseable is skipped; the first 12 are used.
Fan Unit (ATR x)0.4 0.01 to 20What one price unit means, as a multiple of ATR, so a 1x1 rises this much per bar. This is the input the whole fan turns on. A raw price unit cannot transfer between instruments, and ATR is how the rest of the suite answers that (§4.2). The 0.4 default is measured rather than chosen: it is the median pace of a real swing leg, which makes the 1x1 the typical move. Frozen at the bar the fan forms, so the rays never move.
Fan Show Square of 9Off Horizontal levels at the square-root rotations of the anchor price. Off by default: it is a different construction from the fan and most readers want one or the other.
Fan Step (degrees)45 1 to 360How far around the square each level sits. 45 gives eight levels per rotation, 90 gives four. The step enters as degrees over 180, so 180 is one whole increment of the square root.
Fan Levels Each Way4 1 to 12How many levels above and below the anchor. Needs no ATR: the square root scales the spacing with price by itself, which is the contrast with the fan's unit.
Fan Extend RightOn Run the rays and levels to the right edge, which is where they are read. With this off the rays stop a few bars from the anchor and the fan shows almost nothing.
Fan Line StyleSolid Solid, Dashed, Dotted
Fan Rising Fan #089981 A fan from a swing low; its rays climb.
Fan Falling Fan #f23645 A fan from a swing high.
Fan Square of 9 #787b86 The rotation levels.

How it works

The script tracks confirmed swings and ignores those whose leg did not cover enough of the average true range. Each new alternating swing produces a box on the last two swings and anchors a fan on the newest one. A swing low anchors a rising fan and a swing high a falling one.

Gann's 1x1 assumes one unit of price per unit of time, which means nothing on a chart until you say what a price unit is. Here a price unit is a multiple of the market's average true range, 0.4 by default, fixed at the bar the fan forms. That figure was chosen as the median pace of real swing legs, so the 1x1 is the typical move, 2x1 a fast one and 1x2 a slow one. The Square of 9 needs no such scaling.

A box is a subdivision of a finished move, so nothing breaks it; the next swing simply draws a newer one. Fans have no invalidation either. Box Max Boxes and Fan Max Anchors decide how many stay on the chart, one each by default.

Limitations

  • Confirmation lag. Boxes and anchors are confirmed swings, so each appears Swing Length bars after the swing happened.
  • Narrow boxes get no time divisions. A box narrower than the number of divisions in bars cannot be cut cleanly, so it shows only its price divisions.
  • The fan unit is an assumption. The 0.4 ATR default was measured on one market and timeframe. Other markets may need a different Fan Unit for the 1x1 to sit at their typical pace.
  • Rays across session gaps. Rays are defined per bar but drawn in time, so on markets with gaps between sessions they drift from their per bar slope.
  • Gann levels are a framework. The eighths, rays and rotations are reference lines, not predictions.

Frequently asked questions

One Gann Box on the last two alternating swings, divided into eighths across price and bars, with its diagonal and the price lines extended to the right. The fan is off until you turn on Show Gann Fan.

The time divisions are counted in bars. When a box is narrower than the number of divisions, two divisions would land on the same bar, so the script draws only the price divisions for that box.

One price unit is a multiple of the average true range, set by Fan Unit (ATR x), 0.4 by default. A 1x1 ray rises that much per bar. The value is fixed when the fan forms, so the rays never move.

Two. gann_box fires when a new box is drawn on the last swing, and gann_anchor fires when a new fan set is anchored, with a message saying whether it is a swing low or high.
